Best of 2010 | Sports

"BYU's Dane Nielsen (16) attempts to outrun the ball as he sprints to first base against Washington at Miller Field on the campus of BYU, Thursday, March 11, 2010. Nielsen was thrown-out on the play."

It's a bit hard for me to mutter the words "Best of the Year" since by the time 2010 ends, I will have had spent a combined three months sidelined after injuring my back and having spine surgery.

Nothing is more difficult than laying around in pain wishing I could be out making pictures. But with some sort of luck, I started off 2010 shooting a lot of sports, and shooting well.

This year, I realized I have a broken gear curse, well, good omen when something breaks or gets close to being annihilated. What I mean is that every time something happens to my gear, I make a photo I really like. Last year, my 300mm fell off a golf cart, and I made my favorite golf photo to date.

In this case, during March, seconds after shooting the above opening picture, I got an Error 99 and had to run to my car to get my personal gear. In which case I ended up making another cool diving catch photo (which is somewhere in the gallery).

Much like last year, I was introduced to a lot of what I call "firsts" - which I live for. I love spontaneity and I have a passion for being exposed to anything new be it a location, person, sport, etc.

Included in that list was: lawnmower racing, demolition derby, rodeo, and inner-tube water polo.

Sorry for the loose edit, just looking for opinions if you are willing to share. And if you've read this far down, again, these are my favorite action and feature sports pictures from 2010.

Stay tuned. Feedback welcome. Enjoy.

Awesome perspective Patrick. You get up close and personal & step back and soak it in. I really like #30's team shot (I think that's what's going on there). Great moments.
